The Learning Center’s PatchWork Contest is an opportunity for Berklee students to create a sampler instrument, and/or compose a piece of music from the sampler instrument collective. This is a two-phase contest. Phase one, the PatchWork Design Contest, takes place during the first half of the spring semester and requires students to create a sampler instrument patch. Phase two, the PatchWork Composition Contest, takes place during the second half, and requires students to compose a piece of music using only the sampler instrument patches from the PatchWork Design Contest. Sponsored by McDSP, iZotope, MOTU and Keith McMillen Instruments, both contests have their own prizes and judging cycles.

Download the sampler patches created in the PatchWork Design Contest, and compose an original piece of music. Your piece must use only these patches, but as an optional addition, you may record one live instrument (i.e., vocals, guitar, drums), and sequence one virtual instrument (any synth, sampler, drum machine, etc. from any of your music software). Your piece may be in any style or genre, at any tempo and use any number of sampler patches from the provided collection. Your piece must be between two and three minutes in length.
