Composers Expo

This year's Music for Film Networking Event was a great success. Drawing over 200 people from all over New England, Berklee composers, sound designers and audio engineers had a wonderful opportunity to interact with professional and student filmmakers. Starting off the evening was the Music for Film Expo. Berklee students that pre-registered for the event could sign up for an expo booth, where they could play demos, show their websites and exchange business cards. Filmmakers, many from Emerson College, and the Center for Digital Imaging Arts at Boston University, avidly circulated around the expo meeting Berklee students and making connections for potential future collaborations.

Presentation

Titled "Roll sound...roll playback...action! - Music on camera - real or playback?", Berklee's own visiting faculty member, Mason Daring, discussed dealing with onscreen source music, and involving the composer/music editor/music supervisor earlier in the process. He showed examples from films he scored, "Honeydripper" and "Eight Men Out".

Film Scoring Contest 5 Showcase

The last part of the Music for Film Networking event was the 5th annual Film Scoring Contest Finalists' Showcase and Awards Ceremony. For the first time in its history the contest movie was provided by a student filmmaker. Heather Beliveau (director of contest film Michael's Rose) from Burlington College, came along with faculty and filmmaker Allan Nichols, and cast and crew from the film Jarrod Collins and Ryan Hardy. Also in attendance from Berklee were film scoring faculty Michael Sweet and Sheldon Mirowitz.

With 60 entries to the contest this year, the caliber and talent on display was fantastic. Each of the seven finalists, whose scores were premiered, shared with the audience their interpretation of the movie and creative process when composing their scores. The winners were chosen by our judging panel, which included: Heather Beliveau, panelists Mason Daring and Lorre Fritchy, Assistant Chair of Film Scoring Alison Plante, and last year's contest winner and Berklee alumnus Austin Creek.

At the registration table, participants picked up their registration materials and nametags, wrote an icebreaker comment, "Ask me about..." , and dropped off a business card for the raffle. In the lobby and at the food table (with wonderful salads donated by b.good) filmmakers and composers had the opportunity to mingle. In between the presentations prizes were raffled. From Berklee t-shirts, to film festival passes graciously donated by the Northampton Independent Film Festival, and the Wood's Hole Film Festival. The top prize this year was from Wonder Bar of Allston, who offered their establishment for a cast & crew party or film screening.
