Richard Gould and Richard Ludlow of the Berklee Sound Design Network stopped by the Media Lab to talk about the sounds of the original three Star Wars films – episodes IV, V, and VI. Highlighting specific sounds from each of the three movies, they discussed how they were created and the stories behind them. They also took the time to explain how to recreate some of the sounds in your DAW of choice, emphasizing a couple effects in particular including phase shifting and the doppler effect.
The Richards concluded by raffling off “The Sounds of Star Wars” by J.W. Rinzler, a visually and aurally engaging book that goes even further in depth into the sounds behind the acclaimed film series, as well as the Star Wars blu-ray collection.
Interested in joining the Sound Design Network? They meet Mondays at 1PM in room 268 of the 150 Mass Ave building.
